XIX para pelear con otros perros en fosos. Se creó al cruzar el bulldog (que entonces era más ágil y tenía las patas más largas) con un terrier, posiblemente el fox terrier. Conocido otrora como bull-and-terrier y half-and-half, el staffordshire bull es un perro robusto, musculoso e inusualmente fuerte, con mandíbulas poderosas, que tiene 43–48 cm (17–19 pulg.) de alzada y pesa 14–23 kg (30–50 lb). Su pelaje duro y corto puede ser de cualquier color, liso o variegado. See also bull terrier.
